Outstanding contribution in 2016
Every year, at the start of Term 4, the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet celebrates the outstanding contributions made by international students to NSW communities.
In October, these exceptional students were recognised at the 2016 NSW International Student Awards ceremony at Sydney Opera House*, officiated by Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events, Stuart Ayres, who congratulated all winners and finalists.
DE International is thrilled to congratulate Abigail Aguilar, from the Philippines and at Hunters Hill High School, who won the 2016 NSW International Student of the Year – Schools. A terrific achievement.
Abigail stood out as a leader at Hunters Hill High School with her strong work ethic and focus on achievement. She acted as a mentor for the international students at her school and represented the group through her role on the Student Representative Council. In 2015, she received the Year 11 School Citizenship Award and was awarded the Hunters Hill High School Senior International Student Award in 2016, recognising both academic and community achievement.
We'd also like to congratulate Weihan (Brian) Wang as an award finalist. Brian is from China and studying at Kogarah High School. He was nominated for his leadership, fundraising and community involvement. Since starting at Kogarah High School in 2015 Brian has become the international students' chosen representative and vice-captain of the school. In his leadership role he gives international students a voice within the school community, and helps new students settle quickly by connecting them with one another. He is known as a caring, active and passionate student.
Abigail's singular award, and Brian's success in reaching the finals, acknowledges the important contribution of international students in NSW government schools - and a hearty congratulations from all of us here at DE International.
*This Awards Ceremony not to be confused with the DE International Awards which are held in Term 1 each year. This Premier's award showcases the achievements of international students in schools, English Language Intensive Course for Overseas (ELICOS), Vocational Education and Training (VET) and higher education.
