Congratulations to Katherine Pei Kun Qi, from China who is studying at Beverly Hills Girls High School, for winning the 2017 NSW International Student of the Year Award – Schools!

The annual International Student Awards, organised by StudyNSW, celebrate the outstanding contributions international students make to their communities and the state of NSW. They also acknowledge the organisations that support international students with community programs and initiatives.

The ceremony was held at Government House on Friday 22 September 2017.  His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (ret'd), the Governor of NSW spoke at the awards ceremony and congratulated all winners and finalists. The event showcased the achievements of international students in the categories of Vocational Education and Training (VET), Schools, English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) and Higher Education.

Katherine has touched the lives of her peers through her leadership role at Beverly Hills Girls High School. She is a mentor for international students at her school and represents the group on the Student Representative Council. Katherine provides invaluable guidance and support to newly enrolled international students and facilitates their successful transition to high school. She has also maintained her involvement in a community nutrition program for students in Fujian province (China) while studying in Australia.

We also congratulate Mizuki Shimosaka, from Japan who is studying at Cobar High School and was a finalist for Student of The Year Award. Mizuki was nominated for her volunteer work and community involvement. Throughout the year she has actively promoted Japanese culture in her new community enabling greater intercultural understanding.

Katherine and Mizuki's achievements are outstanding examples of the contributions international students make to NSW Government Schools.
