Biggest city/town
Wollongong (population: 250,000)
What's it like to live there?
Wollongong is a modern, port city located in a narrow strip of land between the coastline and the Illawarra escarpment. It boasts a large number of clean, white sandy beaches, combined with great restaurants, cafes, theatres, art galleries and parks and gardens, and is only an hour's drive from Sydney.
The greater Illawarra region includes cities, coastal towns and villages, country areas, snowfields and rural surroundings. Both summer and winter activities are catered for with swimming and surfing through to snow skiing. Tourism is a thriving and growing industry due to the natural beauty of the area which includes hundreds of kilometres of outstanding coastline.
Student testimonials
"My experience studying at Illawarra Institute was excellent. The Wollongong campus was well-equipped and I had professional and skilled teachers. The environment on campus was very peaceful and I found it to be an ideal place to learn. I chose to study at Illawarra Institute as it has a good reputation and it was recommended to me by friends."
Bernadette Njoki, Kenya
"The warmth, the welcome, the genuine appreciation of the culture and background the students come from, the support and guidance. I can't begin to imagine how much hard work must go on behind the scenes to make our lives smoother and easier in a foreign country.
The students here have been wonderful – all wanting to learn, progress and make a difference. The teachers in my faculty – they have been exemplary, supportive, professional, with a wealth of knowledge and simply inspirational. The strong ties that the teachers/faculties have with the childcare industry are fantastic – so much so, coupled with a lot of hard work on my part, I won an industry award, completed the Diploma with distinction and got a job offer."
Tina Casey, UK
