Sydney Institute

Sydney Institute is located in Sydney's inner city, eastern suburbs and extends southwards to Sutherland near the Royal National Park. It has more than 2,000 international students from over 80 countries.

In 2011, the Institute celebrated its 120-year anniversary. The Institute has seven colleges located in and around the city centre, close to many of Sydney's famous tourist attractions - the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, Chinatown, Bondi Beach and Cronulla Beach.

What's it like to live there?

The inner city areas of Sydney, such as Newtown, Glebe, Surry Hills and Paddington, contain a vibrant and culturally diverse community. The St George and Sutherland Shire areas have a strong surfing culture and offer multicultural communities in suburbs such as Rockdale and Kogarah. And Sydney International and Domestic Airports are only 15 minutes from the city centre.

International Student Awards

Atif Prince from Pakistan, a Diploma of Community Welfare student, was Sydney Institute's 2011 International Student of the Year and a finalist in the inaugural 2011 Premier's International Student of the Year Award (Vocational Education and Training).

Student testimonial

Charlotte came to TAFE as a French international student. Having excelled in her studies and successfully completed the Advanced Diploma of Interior Design, she enrolled in the Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) the first degree course offered at TAFE NSW.

Charlotte has also been a very active member of the TAFE community working with fellow students on a wide variety of design awards and projects. She is past President of the Student Association and currently works as the Student Services Officer at the Enmore campus.

"This was a great opportunity for me to expand my knowledge and to gain industry experience through the design internship program that we are undertook as part of the degree course. I'm excited about being one of the first students to graduate from TAFE's first bachelor degree and feel the diploma studies really set me up for the challenge."

Charlotte, France

"I definitely recommend coming to TAFE. It is good quality; the learning is interactive, efficient, useful, factual, case studies, up-to-date including news and politics. My assessments were manageable with realistic time frames and there is great support and structure with help at hand."

Peter Darby, Ireland, Diploma Community Services – Sydney Institute nominee for NSW Premier's International Student of the Year 2012
